We are thrilled to announce the release of Module 11, Planning a VBAC in a Free-Standing Birth Center, available as a free download from vbac.com . This module is part of our ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive and up-to-date information on childbirth options after a cesarean and empowering families to make informed decisions about their pregnancy and birth.

In Module 11 we look into the option of free-standing birth centers, which offer a unique and holistic approach to low-risk pregnancies. These out-of-hospital facilities provide a home-like environment, staffed by a team of qualified healthcare professionals, including Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), Certified Midwives (CM), and Certified Professional Midwives (CPM). These birth centers are designed to provide comprehensive, family-centered care throughout the prenatal, birth, and postpartum periods.

Free-standing birth centers offer numerous benefits to birthing families. You are less likely to need a cesarean, operative vaginal delivery, or an induction of labor, if you labor for a VBAC in a birth center rather than in a hospital. Additionally, studies have shown that birth center care leads to higher rates of VBAC, breastfeeding initiation, and exclusive breastfeeding.

One of the primary reasons families choose a birth center is the individualized midwifery care and continuous support provided during labor and birth. Family members are encouraged to be involved throughout the entire process, and there is a wide range of comfort measures and non-drug pain relief options available. Birth centers often offer postpartum home visits, allowing for an easier transition into parenthood.

While Module 11 highlights the many advantages of planning a VBAC in a birth center, it also acknowledges the potential risks associated with a previous cesarean birth. It is important to note that the risks in a birth center setting may be higher for people with a prior cesarean compared to those without, or those who choose to labor for a VBAC in a hospital.

VBAC is considered a higher-risk delivery compared to a first-time vaginal birth, and there is a small chance of uterine rupture during labor, which can be life-threatening for the mother and baby. If there are any complications during labor or delivery, it can take longer to access medical care available in a hospital.

We encourage all expecting families, especially those considering a VBAC, to explore this module and learn more about the benefits, risks, and considerations of planning a birth center experience.

We are committed to supporting and informing families with a prior cesarean birth about their birth options. Look for future modules and resources as we continue to empower families to make informed decisions and advocate for their preferred choices for birth.
